Summer Rocked!
Monday, 26 September 2011 16:42

5:  Time.  This was my first summer to be really close to my daughter, so we enjoyed many weekends together, some of them were spent in doors, some were out at the parent’s cabin, but many were spent sharing experiences!

4:  The Red Deer Farmers Market.  When I lived in Red Deer over a decade ago, the whole eat local movement wasn’t as big as it is now, and a few visits to the farmer’s market I realized why it’s a weekly destination fro many during the warmer months. You can go there, find breakfast and a latte, pick up fresh produce for lunch or dinner, listen to live music and check out local artisans.  Great reason to get up early on Saturday mornings.  Love that Humble Hummus.

3: Road tip to Glacier Park!  I got to join my two brothers for a “brother’s only” trip into the great state of Montana.  Some of my favourite places in North America are around Glacier Park – it’s Banff without the hype..and the tourists!  My fave things are the Going-To-The-Road, Lake Macdonald, the rustic charms of Essex, the hipness of Whitefish and the friendliness of all Montanans.

2:  The live music festivals in Red Deer/Lacombe.  As a person that lived here back in the 90’s, we didn’t have much for live music or cool events to be downtown.  Well, now we have tons!  Alberta’s Own Festival in Lacombe, Central Music Festival, the Sylvan Lake Jazz Fest, and I've noticed Red Deer supports it’s local talent:  Randi Boulton, Rebecca Raabis, Steve Arsenualt, the list goes on and on. And more venues than ever for them to perform in!

1:  Children’s Wish Foundation Train.  Okay, if you know me well, there is nothing better than a ride down the “high iron” – a train ride, and this summer I did the Children’s Wish Foundation train from Red Deer to Edmonton.  I gladly coughed up $45 dollars for a one way trip from Red Deer to Edmonton.  It was fantastic!  I loved riding the rails and coasting along at 55 MPH on a now freight only route.  Standing in the doorway vestibule, listening to the wheels hum along as we cruised through Blackfalds, Lacombe, Ponoka, Hobbema, Wetaskiwin and Leduc – turning heads by many who likely have never seen a passenger train before.

It’s now officially Autumn, the leaves are being chased by the wind- the nights getting longer and cooler.  Summer 2011 was a goon’un!

After seeing status updates on your friend's phones and Facebook profiles that have these weird "@" and "#" signs you've now become a fully addicted master of Twitter! So now who to follow? Well here's what I like!

5 @OMGFacts: I bet you never knew that in some areas of Oklahoma: People who make "ugly faces" at dogs may be fined and/or jailed. Yes, because you wanna know useless bits of trivia just like me!

4 @AskMen: Ladies, re read your Cosmo mags to find out what "quizzes" we will be asked when we least expect it; so why not get the upper hand on US!

3 @fmylife: I read this before I go to bed, and to start my day, sometimes a laugh at someone's obvious misfortune is almost funny? As long as it doesn't happen to me!

2 @ShortSayings: Ever need a quote or a status update that just fits. Find it here! There is one for #EVERYTHING. Yes, I just used that hastag (that's a "#word" together

1 @BlakeShelton: Been a fan of Blake for years, and his tweets are hilarious and witty. Now that he is on the Voice, I'm even a bigger fan!

Be sure to follow us @BigMorningBuzz and our #ReallyCoolShow again! Did I get that to fit in 140 characters? I think so.

Top 5 Websites

Check out 5 cool websites I’d like to share with you!

5) My 9 year old has become very concerned about how we use power and how leaving the car idling is bad for our environment, and lately she’s been on me about turning off the taps, and shutting off lights and unnecessary appliances.  She alerted me to this site that shows how much of a carbon footprint is left by our daily routine!

4) I travel a lot and as much as we can’t change the cost of gas or the the weather brings us; we can forecast how much you will potentially spend on gas:

3) ..and how the road conditions are:

2) Ever wonder what the pier you see on Taylor drive is from?

Did you know that portion of road from near Superstore in the downtown area down to where the Word Of Life Church intersection is used to be the Canadian Pacific Calgary - Edmonton mainline?

Or the fact that Red Deer once had three railroads serving the city center – the last of the lines being pulled out when the 1991 detour around the city was opened?  Red Deer has some rich history and some indications of our railroad past still exist.  The website below is a plan to showcase our history, in concert with our Rail Transportation future!

Check out the Forth Jct Project's website!

Top 5 Things I Like About Spring
Monday, 11 April 2011 12:24

Wow, its spring and it won't be long before we say "adios" to the remaining piles of cruddy snow, and the sand on the streets, the ugly garbage on the streets and sidewalks that were trapped in the frozen wasteland that we call winter.

Can you tell I am SICK of anything to do with winter?

Here's what I am looking forward to for spring 2011!

5) I can leave my windows open - Fresh air trumps the stale environment in my house and in my car! I like to drive with my moon roof open when I can!thumbnailCAB3JI0B

4) Patios - We are in a climate where 6 months of the year we are coped inside. Nothing beats dining al fresco!

3) Tourism season heats up. I always love seeing the out of state and province licence plates on the RV's and cars that are passing through the area. I wonder what destinations there going to; usually the Yukon/Alaska traffic starts up in May and you can thumbnailCAV8SNNPsee them trekking North up the QE2

2) Get the Mountain bike greased up and the tires full of air, Red Deer has an amazing trail system, envied by many smaller cities in Canada. Where else can you ride in a forest, along a river or creek and be only 50 to 100 feet away from civilization? Learn more about our Bike Trails: http://www.hexapod.ca/trails/trails.html

1) I think the biggest thing about spring is the fact that people get friendlier and become more open to their neighbors. I live in a condo apartment, and I'm sure me and my neighbor's will spend some time yakking over a BBQ's with Wine glasses in hand!!
