hens will be allowed to stay for now as part of a city pilot project. Red Deer
City Council has decided to allow current urban chicken operations to continue
while spending the next year drafting a bylaw to deal with the animals. The city
will continue to engage with the community to identify concerns with allowing
chickens in city backyards. A draft bylaw will come back before council within
12 months.

No Licences for Secondary Suites |
|
Tuesday, 21 February 2012 22:14 |
|
Secondary
suite owners will not have to get a licence after City Council voted down a
proposed licencing bylaw. The bylaw would have introduced a yearly fee that
owners would have had to pay in order to legally operate. Councillor Lynne
Mulder says she was initially in favour of a fee, but that she changed her mind
after so many people spoke in opposition at a public hearing last month. Illegal
suites will continue to be enforced by the city on a
compaint-basis.

A
series of unfortunate events in Bowden means their garbage will now be coming to
Red Deer. Councillor Lynne Mulder says the town's garbage truck broke down
recently so she recommended that they come to the city for help. Mulder says it
will be a relatively small amount of garbage that won't have much impact on the
landfill and that it is only an interim solution until a greener solution for
garbage disposal is realized. The Central Alberta Waste Commission announced
recently that they had stopped negotiations with Plasco to develop a waste to
energy plant in Red Deer County.

A
family skate, ice sculpturing, and bingo are just some of the activities taking
place in Blackfalds today. The Fifth Annual Winterfest is underway at the
Blackfalds Multi-Plex. Sue Penner with the Town of Blackfalds says there will be
more excitement at noon when the Penguin Dip takes place with 10 brave souls
jumping in an ice-cold pond to raise money for community groups of their
choosing. There is also a family skate in the arena, pond hockey games, and the
night wraps up with a fireworks display at All-Star Park at around 7
