Top 5 Favourite Stories of 2011
Friday, 30 December 2011 18:01
2011 was a busy year. And while most Year In Review lists will contain some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, my list contains my personal favourite events or happenings.
#5 Apparently Katy Perry's year was full of 'Fireworks' and now 'The One That Got Away." (No more jokes, I promise.) It's revealed Russell Brand has filed for divorce from the 'Teenage Dream' and will spend 2012 single. Well, as single as Russell Brand can be. The part of this story that I find hard to believe is that HE filed for divorce from HER. So they're splitting after 14 months, which is 12 months more than most people were expecting it to last. I wonder if this had something to do with the Tweet he posted of her with no make up...
Watch what you Tweet, kids!
#4 The Wedding of William and Kate was watched the world over. I've never been one to gush over the royal family, but I do understand the history behind it. I like that the world can celebrte such a happy moment, despite the financial turmoil the world continued to be in. And the fact royalty can marry a commoner is one of the dreams of every little girl in the world. That may or may not be accurate as I don't spend much time with little girls.
Okay, maybe I wanted the same thing. Is Harry still single?
#3 Back in April, the PlayStation network was hacked. I don't say this as having a laugh at any PS users, as much as bringing attention to the sheer numbers the world of gaming has created. It is estimated the hackers obtained credit card information, passwords and other information on over 70million users. And that is just the PlayStation network alone. It's always a good idea to check that you haven't been a victim of identity theft but you don't really expect it while playing LittleBigPlanet.
Even Sackboy isn't impressed with your shenanigans.
#2 For many residents of Slave Lake, May 15, 2011 is a date which will forever be etched into their minds. With a wildfire raging through their town, and an evacuation order ineffect, lives were turned upside down in an instant. Being a former resident of Slave Lake, I watched the news to see the destruction unfold and checking Facebook and Twitter to see if friends were safe. And I was amazed at the generosity of Red Deerians who donated money, clothing and toys for people who lost everything. Remember Caleb who wanted to donate his bike?
#1 For me, the biggest event of 2011 was finding out I was going to be a dad. (See The Worthington Clan). There are few things more intimidating than knowing you are going to be responsible for a helpless individual. And I think we can both agree the last thing this world needs is another version of me. But my wife, who is getting rounder by the day, and I, who is also getting rounder by the day, are excited to begin this new chapter in our lives. We lived in Red Deer when we got married. We will now have our first child here. Remarkable.
Happy 2012, everyone. May your days be long and your hardships be few.
Top Five Things I Did This Summer
Monday, 19 September 2011 17:48
If you're anything like me, and we both pray you're not, then this summer went by way to fast. With the cooler, wet temperatures in July, it seems we're just getting into summer now. But there were months between June and September.
#5 Stampeders football. There were more than a few weekends I found myself at McMahon Stadium to see the Calgary Stampeders, the most penalized team in the CFL, take more pentalties and even win some games. Fun fact: It was a Stamps game where I met my wife.
#4 Not watering the lawn. I know the title is things I DID this summer but with the soggy July we had, the lawn pretty much took care of itself. Although when we did get a break in the rain I found myself mowing the lawn. So I guess you could say I mowed the lawn. That counts, right?
#3 The Calgary Stampede: In the post "Top Five Things to do in Red Deer or Alberta This Summerâ I mentioned the Stampede was a tradition in my family and it was carried on this year. Actually, we went with another couple who, like us, one person loves riding the rides and one doesnât. So the two that do went and risked their lives and the two of us who donât planned on how we would spend the life insurance money.
#2 Golf: Yes, you read that right. If there is something I am worse at than golf, I have yet to find it. Sure, it doesnât help I havenât been golfing since 1994 but it was still an embarrassing adventure. I guess the biggest problem was not keeping my eye on the ball. Apparently Iâm quite vain and want to admire my great show off the tee. Problem was the swing often misses the ball when youâre not looking at it.
Forgetting something?
#1 BBQ. When my wife and I got married, one of the wedding gifts was a BBQ. But having rented a place with limited deck space we decided to not set it up until we had a place of our own. So this summer was spent outside grilling juicy steaks and burgers. That intoxicating scent was enough incentive to make me stand out in the rain. Pro tip: Eight minutes a side.
Top Five Things to do in Red Deer or Alberta This Summer
Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:24
Alberta is a beautiful province to live and even better to visit. These are my summer traditions which I've done most of since I was a kid. No, camping does not make the list.
#5 The Raymond Parade. My mom grew up in Raymond, Alberta and every Canada Day weekend we packed in the car and drove to take in the parade. My grandpa rode in it for many years and was always involved in one way or another. And who doesnât like fireworks?
#4 Tubing down the Red Deer River. Summer days taking the tubes and spending a lazy day or ten floating. I also remember the hail storm we got one year and were stuck in the middle of the river. I'd almost forgotten about it but that may be from the hail hitting my skull.
#3 Lake Louise. Stunning. Each time I look at the picturesque lake embedded in the midst of Canadaâs tallest mountains, I realize how lucky we are to live here. Then I wish I had a time machine and bought up all the land so I could have it to myself. Lake Louise reminds me what a dork I am.
#2 Sylvan Lake. Spending days on the beach, back when Sylvan Lake had a beach, was one of the highlights of the summer. Even as aged, not unlike a fine wine or a block of cheese, I appreciated the simplicity of such an event as digging toes in the sand and making castles.
#1 The Calgary Stampede. Each summer, itâs a tradition in my family to hit the grounds at least once a year. And when I was younger it seemed like I was with a different young woman each year. You may not tell by looking at me, but I was quite a ladiesâ man. Was.
Bio: âTV's Craig Fergusonâ Iâve always been fascinated with Scottish culture and the accent is probably my favourite in the world. Craig is a brilliant comedian and host of âThe Late Late Showâ but it wasnât until I read his book âAmerican On Purposeâ where I truly appreciated who he is as a person. The book is funny, touching and brutally honest. Do I have a man crush? Maybe. But the guy has a robot skeleton side kick!
Bio: âFounder,The Global Enrichment Foundation- Advancing Somali women's leadership, building stronger communities and promoting peace.â A Central Alberta woman who has endured more hardships than anyone should face in a life time. And rather than play the woe-is-me card, she founded The Global Enrichment Foundation, giving Somali women a voice. My awe is only surpassed by my respect.
Seth is the head writer of Saturday Night Live, one of the funniest shows to ever be on television. The Weekend Update segments are the reason I tune in and usually find myself laughing out loud, or LOL as the kids say. His razor sharp wit and his comedic timing make SNL a must watch again.
Bio: âMomstown Central Alberta is a community for neighbourhood moms of young kids in the Red Deer area.â Not having kids, itâs hard to imagine dealing with little ones and devoting your whole life to their well being and upbringing. And sometimes itâs nice to have adult conversation. Alison does a great job of planning activities and helping momâs feel connected to a world outside their home. Does this sound weird coming from a man?
Bio: âI am an actor and a writer and I co-created SoulPancake and my son, Walter.â You may know Rainn as Dwight Schrute from âThe Officeâ, but Rainn is much more than an assistant to the comedy of the show. His unusual thoughts are now available in 140 characters or less. Not everything is suitable for young ears⊠er⊠eyes. But the randomness of his Tweets is enough to make me smile.
Of course there are the obvious websites like Facebook and YouTube which could dominate every list, but these are five sites which I visit almost every day. Some are nerdy. Some are helpful. But hey, Iâm both of those things.
5 Google. (google.com) Itâs just fun to say. Google. A word we all used as kids and never thought it would amount to anything other than THE HIGHEST NUMBER EVER! But now itâs my search engine for everything. Except Google itself.
4 Ask Mr. Robot (askmrrobot.com) My fellow World of Warcraft players will appreciate this one as a handy guide to better gearing your toon. Talents? Gear? Gemming? Enchants? Reforging? Itâs all here in a mathematically sound format which provides a constantly updates picture of the best way to spec your character. Youâre welcome.
3 Groupon (groupon.com) Despite not having this service for Red Deer, Iâve really been finding it interesting for my trips to the city. Both Calgary and Edmonton are listed with a daily coupon which, more often than not, is actually quite useful. Print the voucher or bring it up on your mobile device, then present it at the business to get your deal. Simple. So next time youâre taking an unexpected trip to Edmonton to visit your husbandâs old hockey buddy, you and the kids can do something other than listen to them whine about the Oilers. (*Editorâs note: Oh snap!)
2 TMZ (tmz.com) Iâm not a huge fan of the paparazzi nor am I a huge fan of seeing celebrities shopping or taking the dog for a walk. But this site, and the TMZ Live segment, puts a spin on these rather mundane stories which I canât help but find enjoyable. And if Iâm ever famous, Iâve learned to stop and give these guys five minutes. Being nice to them now can avoid greater humiliation later. Â Hi, Harvey!
1 The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) This is the premiere site for all things movies. Being somewhat of a film fanatic, I constantly find myself drawn here to cross reference all sorts of trivia. Did you know David Boreanaz was on an episode of âMarried with Childrenâ? What do you mean George Clooney tried out for the Cincinnati Reds? Itâs all there. If you love the cinema, say good bye to all your free time.
